Blimey - what a lot of review activity on this venue! Ignore visitors comments. If he really fished Scottish lochs, Im sure he would be able to spell the word correctly and the fact that he float fishes with a sight bob shows that he is no fly fisherman. Ive been to Big Well twice now and its a fine small stillwater. Its easy to fish, which makes it ideal for beginners and it does not pretend to be a challenge to an experienced flyfisher. I fish mostly for wild trout on small streams but I still enjoy a day on a stillwater and I would never be so arrogant as to belittle less experienced anglers who prefer a different type of fishing. The staff at Big Well are friendly and welcoming and the place has a really good atmosphere. The fishery is well maintained with good water clarity I paid : £12 (catch & release) Stayed : 4 hours Caught : 2 Rainbows Best fly: Klinkhamer |

colin and liz, great people, great venue, it is a small water, but crystal clear, gives the anger the chance to see the trouts reaction to what ever fly you present, cooked breakfast is always filling,, the fish fight superb,as has been said before, colin and liz and the other 2 gents are always on hand to offer any advice,ok, some bigger fish would be nice, but over all, a great venue, when one works hard, and has the chance to get out for a few hours, hoping to hook into a trout, this is certainly the place to go, a must for taking kids as the chance to see the fish in front of you gives you that extra enjoyment factor when fishing,,love the place I paid : 12 Stayed : from the gates open to gates shut Caught : 10 Best fly: black, brown buzzer weighted Tactics : cast in and let it drop |

Have to agree 100% with the last 2 comments. Very safe place to fish for one and all. Always made to feel part of Liz and Colins family. Graham and Bobby are like a breath of fresh air and always will help you and give advice. As will all those who are fishing around the ponds. ( its good to share} For those who dont like Big Well GOOD and DONT COME BACK we dont need you I paid : £8.00 and then £3.80 per fish Stayed : 4 hours Caught : 4 rainbow Best fly: Fritz Tactics : let sink then quick retrieve |

Often fish here, used to come with my dad and have been going there since I was a kid, now bring my husband. Have never had a bad fish here and I fish regularly. Great place to fish, nice surroundings, Liz and Colin great, happy to advise anytime. As a woman who fishes, I feel really safe and at home here, whereas Ive not felt so safe in other places. Nice clear waters so you can see what the fish are doing in the shallows. |

I have fished these lakes for two seasons now. The owner Colin and his wife Liz cant do enough for you and never forget your name. The lakes are always well stocked with some of the finest trout to be found in the area. The afternoon staff (Graham and Bobby) offer tips to everyone who asks and again will do there best to ensure you enjoy a great days fishing and a good chat/laugh at the same time. With free tea or coffee what more can I say. I paid : £8.00 Plus £3.60 per fish Stayed : 4 Hours Caught : Three 3lb rainbow Trout and two 2.5lb Tiger Trout Best fly: Cats Whisker and Black & Green Mantana Tactics : Let the fly sink deep and fast retrieve |

Review Venue Guide Ltd, a simple check on the Troutfisherman venue guide on the internet will show you that there are at least 25 places registered in South Wales for this year that are Troutmaster venues. For all the anglers who "travel a long way", as you put it, surely a simple phone call to the venue before they leave home to confirm Troutmaster participation would be easy enough. By the way, there are forms at this venue & have been for the last 5 years. |

I fish there on a regular basis as I am new to fly fishing. Everybody has to learn and some are older and slower then others. For what we pay its so minimum. On Sunday I fished a trout lake in The New Forrest, Paid an arm and a leg and came home with nothing, as did the 5 others who were fishing there. For those who have perfected the art of fly fishing take the challange and fish the larger ponds and rivers |

Hey jackass, keep on fishing this duck pond with its bent fish and rubbish banks, try fishing on the river wye and locks of scotland like proper flyfishermen do,your the one who must be crap! tight lines on your duck pond pal, donkey! I paid : waste of money! |

Took a mate today who wants to get into fly fishing,Ideal location for this as casting distances are not required, the Fishery is small and ideal for the novice or fisherman who like to catch a few and see many more, Colin was honest as always and said the lakes were being restocked at noon, this happened, we fished the clear lake so a new angler can see the fish almost stalk them and the reaction and movement of the fish and presentation of the fly, good to understand how and what happens under the surface for the novice, Now the more advanced angler will no doubt be aware this is a small venue it doesnt claim to be anything else but a friendly welcoming Fishery set up and run very well to cater for the needs of many but not all tastes. Fish quality looked good to be honest very health I paid : £12 Stayed : 5hrs Caught : 6 rainbows all about 2lb+ Best fly: White Dokey Tactics : Let it sink slow retrieve |

first i read the review on this venue i didnt know what to think of it when i turned up. tried every fly in the box, went down to 3 pound leader had one pull on a big lure and that was it, caught nothing. i only saw a few trout. one was in very bad condition! it was missing fins and it was bent! i coudnt even swim propely it was wobbling. i saw a few caught but they came in like wet sacks i dont realy want to fish it again. but im sure there are a few good fish in there. |
By visitor- On 20/03/2010 |
Went here as a visitor this week, what a shame! caught a few rainbows but a few had there backs broken, and one had two flies stuck in his gob,and whats more when the owner went home i saw a bloke with a black bag chucking trout pellets in and all the fish were going mad for them and going towards this area, whats going on at this venue? will not stay open for long at this rate! very poor! will not be going back. I paid : £12 c&r Stayed : a few hours. Caught : 4 rainbows. Best fly: buzzer-black. Tactics : lures, and sight-bob. |

Oh dear pj, you really are obsessed with numbers are,nt you? Do you not think there is more to fly fishing than watching a float, (sight bob), or stripping a lurid ball of brightly coloured fluff? Why not try targeting the wild browns with a natural or is this to hard for you? Granted , you will not get into the mandatory number of fish caught that you seem to be obsessed by, but one 1lb wild brown in a session is worth 10 times the kudos of 1 dozen stockies. |
By pj. newport. On 13/02/2010 |
Hey Gazza, my fly choice has got me 5 to 10 fish each visit, did not put yours down did you ?, that sums you up then pal, FOOL!. |
By PM On 09/02/2010 |
Great sport on a bitterly cold day. The fish were selective, examining and rejecting every dry fly I tried til I got the right one! Great fun watching them slurp the fly off the top. Also a friendly welcome and superb cooked breakfast. Next time Im in the area I will def pay them another visit. I paid : £23.50 Stayed : 6 hours Caught : 5 fish to 3.5 lb Best fly: green klinkhammer Tactics : dry fly cast over weedbeds |
By Baza On 06/02/2010 |
Yup PJ some people are trying to encourage the younger generation to partake in out door activities. Did you know that Sue Street hold the UK record for the largest fresh water fish caught. The idea of trout fishing is the skill not the weight you can catch. Shame on you. I paid : £10.00 Stayed : 3 hrs Caught : 5 Best fly: Fritz |
By Gazza On 04/02/2010 |
Hey pj, bit sad havin a pop at a lady tryin to get kids fishing is,nt it? Says it all about your angling ideals if all your interested in is "big fish" & not the art in catching fish by skill. Your mickey mouse fly choice sums you right up pal. |

Well PJ I am a grandmother who has just started fishing, and as a beginner feel that you have a selfish approach. Where is one to learn the skills. If your that good go somewhere else if you need a challenge. As for children I would much prefer the kids to get fresh air and learn a sport rather then sit by a TV watching violence and then go out an mug old folk. I paid : £16.00 Stayed : 3 hrs Caught : 3 fish |

ok for a bit of fun, good place for the young ones to start, caught my 10 in 3.5 hrs,my boy 11 caught 2.food good and cheap, dont bother bringing your own.one down fall was that when 2 guys went for breakfast they left all they rods, line all over bank ,on the pond, and it seemed to be where the fish were holding.so no body could fish there.they didnt move ALL DAY,There should be a rule that u remove all tackle from the bank when having breakfast,as space is limted here.they seemed to think cause they were there at 7 am they had the right to do it,we got there at 10.20,left at 3.30 and they were still there.will return, week day would be better. Took the grand kids (2 eleven year old boys) yesterday 3.11.09. Boy did it rain and hail. Despite the weather these kids did not give up. With some good advice and TLC from other fishermen especially Di, they just did not want to go home. The owner whos name and dont know and the staff and all who fished there yesterday you made a Granny and 2 grand sons have a wonderful day. We caught 4 trout all from the novice pond and lost 10, smart fish (dumb anglers). Loved it so much had to promise kids we would return. I always enjoy the opportunity of fishing at Big Well when I come down from Scotland. Compared to other fisheries in the area it comes out on top. Its always great fun, the owners are a charming couple who make everyone feel welcome. The fish are of an excellent quality and the clarity of the water is excellent. Top marks all round. Spence! Read the reviews they will tell you how good the fishing is. If you want to fish big waters this is not the place for you. Took the grand children fishing on Saturday (ages 14 and 8) They had a great time casting and catching fish on the on the novice pond. While I struggled on the larger ponds. Why not give it a go then write a review? |

i cannot understand why you people are rubbishing this wonderful fishery.i have been fishing bigwell for over a year with my family.it might be a small fishery but i cannot understand why some of you are saying the fish are poor quality.i have caught many fish over 5 pound.my father and i are disabled with it being a smaller fishery it helps us a great deal.i also cannot understand why u are saying its a waste of money when it is the cheapest place to fish.you people that are rubbishing this place need your head checking. |
By Basil On 27/09/2009 |
I read with some amusement the comments left on this fishery. Fished there once & the people may well be nice etc but at the end of the day its just a bit of a "novelty" place. Why dont you all try the real fishing world & pay a visit to Llandegfedd, Chew, Wentwood or even maybe Cefn Mably, Cwm Head or Woolaston & see how good you are there. |
By Mr T. (Blackwood) On 26/09/2009 |
Fished today I caught 2 nice size trout. I had a big one on, it snaped the leader. 2 got away. plenty of follows. Brian caught 3 on the novice pond, weight over 6lb 8oz. Dissapointed really, no challenge what so ever. The novice pond did make me laugh though talk about fishing in a bucket. One chap had a go at me for putting fish back which my ticket allowed me to do. The owner then gave him permission to use BREAD!! I have nothing against the owner at all. He probably just wanted to keep everyone happy. |

Our stay was for 3 nights. The food there was great and the fishing was fantastic.Largest fish we caught weighed in at 7 pounds 10 ozs.Caught several fish in the 2 to 5 pound range. We are planning another trip next year and will definately be back for the fly fishing again. The scenery in Wales is so beautiful and all the people we met were so friendly. |

I visited Big Well after seeing it advertised in the Environment Agency booklet and it was handy as I was travelling back home to Oxford from mid Wales. The ponds are on the small side but the water is very clear and there are plenty of fish to be seen. All of the staff were extremely helpful and indeed recommended the local pub for B&B which turned out to be very good in all departments. I caught plenty of fair size fish - ALL in perfect condition and talking to other anglers some of whom were frequent visitors, they were all pleased with their fishing and praised the owners for their hospitality and the way that they encourage youngsters to start fly fishing. I paid : £6 to fish+ £3.60 per fish. £10 catch and return Stayed : 3hrs one evening. Most of next day Caught : 1x5lbs 1x3lbs 5x2.5 lbs Best fly: Caught most on small green nymph, also daddies Tactics : Try anything green! |

This is my second review submision and I do it just to try and answer some of the veiled suggestions that Colin/Liz might be responcible for the glowing review. I cannot believe that anyone who has visited Bigwell could comment on the quality of the trout stocked there as having broken backs. I would also suggest that several of these REVIEWS have been placed here in an attempt to put people off visiting possibly by a business rival? I would finish by saying that the large number of anglers visiting Bigwell speaks volumes for the fishery. |
By L.H On 08/09/2009 |
the fishing cheap because the fish are NOT very good. i got 3 trout and two of them were bent. they looked like their backs have been broken. they all came to my net very quickly. i dont rate the fish on taste. |

The fish fight like hell even the freshly stocked. water is so clear you can see to the bottom. I am very hard to please but i can not say enough good things about this venue. I paid : £6 fish to kill £3.60 per fish, £5 extra for c&r Stayed : 8 hour both days Caught : Two days 20 rainbows, one 8ibs 5, one 5ibs 11 Best fly: Green lures, daddies, hares ears Tactics : try anything all retrieves worked for me |

I broke my collar bone 7 weeks ago and havent been able to fish a result. Yesterday I thought I might give it a try and my son-in-law Justin suggested that we tried "Big Well" as the lakes would not be too big to overtax my shoulder. We had a great day which was started with an excellent "Full Monty breakfast" cooked by Liz and a wonderful days fishing. I caught and kept 3 lovely rainbows each about two and a quarter pounds and Justin caught and released 10 beauties. The setting is excellent and well maintained I would definitely come again and would highly suggest that if you want a good enjoyable days fishing in really friendly company to pay a visit to "Big Well". I paid : £20 which included breakfast and 3 good fish. Stayed : 11 hours Caught : 3 Rainbow about two and a quarter pounds each Best fly: Gold head lures, Black or Olive were best. Tactics : Quick 4" retrieves |

Started my fly fishing at Big Well and have never felt the need to go else where. Why fix what isnt broke. Both Liz and Colin give such a warm welcome and coupled with excellent food makes this such a popular venue for novice/expert/young and old.My biggest regret was waiting until I was retired before I started fly fishing. |

Visited Big Well today with my wife to have a lesson and to see if we would enjoy fly fishing. We Did. Both Colin and Liz are very friendly and the welcome could not have been better. Colin is a very good instructor and with his help and advise both my wife and myself very quickly casting consistantly. We cant wait to purchase our kits from Colin and get out there fishing. Big Well has a very good shop and the food is excellent and cheap. I feel that Big Well is going to become our second home. To end Big Well is simply fantastic. |

First time here and thought it was well worth the trip over from Bristol. Four small lakes with a large number of fishing points so no real problem despite it being quite busy. I will definitely be returning with the kids. I paid : £19.60 Stayed : 4 hours Caught : 4 fish totalling 13lb Best fly: Black Nomad Tactics : slow retrieve |

The owners are very helpful, with good facilities available. Fishing was good and the quality of the fish was good. The four lakes are not that big, and at times I found other anglers casting over my line. Ideal for younger or inexperienced anglers, I would pefer larger waters. I will fish there again as it suits my son down to the ground and offers catch and release for me. |
